Municipality of Aquileia - Comune di Aquileia

Aquileia (in Friuli-Venezia Giulia) is a city along the Natisone River, 16 km west from the outflow of Isonzo River into the Adriatic Sea. During the Early Roman Empire, it was one of the largest and wealthiest cities with a population of 100.000 in the second century AD. Today the city is small (about 3.500 inhabitants) and is one of the main archeological sites of Northern Italy.  Most of ancient Roman city still lies unexcavated beneath the fields, and as such it constitutes the greatest archaeological reserve of its kind. The Patriarchal Basilica, an outstanding building with an exceptional mosaic pavement (750 m2), played a key role in the evangelization of a large region of central Europe.

Archaeological Area and the Patriarchal Basilica of Aquileia are declared as UNESCO World Heritage site from 1989.
